Definition of Tackifier

Hits: 928 img

Tackifier is a type of additive used to increase the contact viscosity of adhesives. In a broad sense, it is a substance that can increase the viscosity of liquids and the bonding strength. Tackifiers play a wetting role in adhesives and produce high adhesion under certain conditions by diffusing on the surface or inside. They are mostly low molecular weight thermoplastic resins, including natural and synthetic products, with molecular weights ranging from 200 to 2000 and softening points of 5 to 150°C. They are viscous or solid at room temperature and have fluidity after being added to solvents. Tackifiers have large and rigid molecular structures, strong thermoplasticity, and are usually amorphous glass bodies. They are easily soluble in organic solvents such as aliphatic hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons. Common types include rosin resins, polyterpene resins, petroleum resins, polystyrene resins, phenolic resins, etc., which have both plasticizer and softener functions.
