Five Essential Applications of Adhesives in the Photovoltaic Industry That One Should Not Overlook

  1. Bonding and Sealing of the Laminated Part and the Frame
The assembly requirement for the frame and the laminated part after lamination is a tight fit and a firm connection. The laminated part and the frame achieve a continuous and high-strength connection through an adhesive, which greatly improves the bearing capacity and overall rigidity of the solar cell module, and makes the stress distribution more uniform. The cured adhesive layer has good elastic deformation ability to adapt to the thermal deformation and external force deformation during the use of the solar cell module.
  2. Encapsulation of the Solar Cell Chip with the Glass and the Backsheet
The glass, the solar cell chip, and the backsheet material need to be encapsulated with an adhesive. This adhesive layer should not only provide good electrical insulation performance but also possess the following characteristics: high light transmittance; ultraviolet stability (no yellowing); and a certain degree of elasticity to prevent the solar cell chip from cracking under thermal deformation and external impact.
  3. Bonding of the Junction Box
After the encapsulation of the solar cell module is completed, the junction box needs to be bonded to the backsheet with an adhesive. This requires that the adhesive has good bonding performance for various types of backsheets and junction boxes. In order to ensure that the junction box will not fall off from the backsheet even after long-term aging when it is locally stressed, the adhesive is required to have good tear resistance and aging resistance.
  4. Potting of the Junction Box
The insulation performance of the components inside the junction box is required to be very high. When the solar cell module is working under abnormal conditions, a large amount of current will pass through the bypass diode and cause it to heat up. In order to improve the heat dissipation performance and insulation performance of the junction box, potting adhesive needs to be used, which also plays the roles of moisture-proofing and shock-proofing.
  5. Process Bonding in the Silicon Ingot Cutting
The silicon ingot cutting process is a key part of the manufacturing process of solar photovoltaic cells. This process is used to process solid silicon ingots of monocrystalline silicon or polycrystalline silicon. The wire saw first cuts the silicon ingot into square blocks and then into very thin silicon wafers. In this process, an adhesive, mainly an epoxy adhesive, is required for the process bonding of the silicon ingot and the glass.
