Bonding strength refers to the stress required to cause damage at or adjacent to the interface between the adhesive and the adherend in an adhesive assembly under external force, and it is also known as adhesive strength.
Bonding strength represents the stress endured by an adhesive system prior to failure. Its magnitude depends not only on the adhesive force, the mechanical properties of the adhesive, the characteristics of the adherend, and the bonding process, but also on the joint design, stress conditions (type, magnitude, direction, frequency), environmental factors (temperature, humidity, pressure, medium), as well as testing conditions and experimental techniques. It is evident that adhesive force is merely one of the critical factors determining bonding strength. Therefore, bonding strength and adhesive force are two entirely distinct concepts and must never be confused with each other.
