To achieve high-quality, low-cost, and green pollution-free production of lithium-ion batteries, expanding the application of water-based adhesives in positive and negative electrode materials is an inevitable trend. As China's lithium-ion battery industry enters a large-scale production stage, as a key auxiliary material, the raw materials for water-based adhesives used in batteries are gradually being localized. This endows domestic enterprises with inherent advantages in meeting the customized needs of downstream battery manufacturers – in contrast, foreign enterprises usually respond more slowly. Existing studies have fully confirmed that water-based adhesives can effectively reduce the interface impedance between electrodes and electrolytes as well as the internal resistance of batteries, and play a significant role in improving and enhancing the electrochemical performance of batteries. However, in the future, systematic and in-depth research is still needed in multiple aspects, including the selection, modification and performance optimization of water-based polymer adhesive materials with different structures and properties, the exploration of their action mechanisms, and the improvement of related application processes. Overall, the market prospect of water-based adhesives for lithium-ion batteries is very broad.
